01The project
What is OPRACELL?
OPRACELL — “Optimisation of Refrigerating Panels for small Environments using Peltier CELLs” — is a research and development project to create modular, efficient and sustainable thermoelectric cooling systems, suitable for vehicles, means of transport and spaces with structural constraints, where traditional technologies are inadequate.
How does a Peltier cell work?
It is a thermoelectric device: when an electric current flows through it, one side cools down and the other heats up. The cold side cools the space, the hot side releases heat through a heat sink. There are no refrigerant gases or moving parts.
What are the objectives?
- Develop a tailor-made solution.
- Maximise efficiency: +20% compared with the current product, up to +25% with innovative monitoring and control.
- Ensure reliability and durability.
- Simplify installation and maintenance.
- Environmental sustainability.
Who funds it?
The Cohesion Italy 21-27 Calabria — Co-funded by the European Union programme, under the regional call supporting research, development and innovation projects (Action 1.1.1). More on the Project page.

03Timing and activities
How long does the project last?
24 months: from 03/11/2025 to 31/10/2027.

How are the activities organised?
In 7 Work Packages (WP):
- WP1 — Study of the state of the art and of the characteristics of the Peltier cells available on the market
- WP2 — Experimental characterisation of Peltier cells and performance analysis
- WP3 — Integrated design of the refrigerating panels and of the data acquisition and control system
- WP4 — Thermodynamic analysis of case studies using Peltier-cell refrigerated panels
- WP5 — Construction of prototypes using the designed refrigerating panels and implementation of the data acquisition and control system
- WP6 — Analysis of the experimental results obtained to optimise the technical solutions adopted, and their implementation
- WP7 — Dissemination and communication activities
